Six legends celebrate 140 years of IWC Schaffhausen: the Schaffhausen manufactory is celebrating this anniversary with six legendary wristwatches from periods in its history: Pilot's Watch, Portuguese, Ingenieur, Aquatimer, Da Vinci, Portofino – these horological icons have now been reissued as attractive models in the vintage style.
Each one of these six watches, which will be available in unlimited quantities in stainless steel with black dials as well as limited editions in platinum with silvered dials, represents the founding legend of one of today's watch families. The first 140 watches of the IWC Vintage Collection in platinum are reserved for an exclusive offer: they will be sold as a complete set, each watch with the same number, in a beautiful crafted leather case.
Picture shows the IWS Pilot's watch. The fact that the modern interpretation bears such an uncanny resemblance to the “mother of all IWC Pilot’s Watches” is no coincidence: the classical cockpit look of the design, with its luminescent hands and numerals and black dial, has remained unchanged to this day. From a technical point of view, the Pilot’s Watch Hand-Wound with its 44-millimetre diameter represents the state of the art. Instead of the original 83 calibre, the Pilot’s Watch Hand-Wound features a pocket watch movement from the 98000-calibre family – hand-wound with a large screw balance and Breguet spring.
The basic calibre stems from the 1930s and has been series-produced for longer than most other IWC movements. Through the sapphire glass back you can see two technical features reminiscent of the first Jones calibre of 1868: the decorated nickel-silver three-quarter bridge and the Jones arrow. The elongated index served IWC’s founder as a means of adjusting the balance’s oscillating frequency and has remained a hallmark of Jones watches to this day.
