  • Alarm

A watch with the functionality to set an alarm which alerts you with a sound at the time set by you.

Aluminium is a soft, lightweight metal normally with a dull gray appearance caused by a thin layer of oxidation that forms quickly when the metal is exposed to air.

  • Altimeter

A function that provices altitude by responding to changes in barometric pressure, commonly found in pilot watches.  Note that inside a pressurised airplane cabin, the altimeter will register as if on land.

  • Amber

Amber is the common name for fossil plant resin that has an interesting mixture of colours and it is widely used for the manufacture of ornamental objects. Although not mineralized, it is sometimes considered and used as a gemstone.

A watch displaying the time with hands, and not a digital display.

  • Aperture

A small opening on the watch dial in which indications are given - such as the date or day.

  • Applique

A cut-out ornamentation which is applied to the watch dial.

  • Assembling

The process of fitting together the components of a movement.

  • ATM - Atmosphere

Sometimes water-resistance is measured in atmospheres (ATM) - a unit of pressure - which is equal to 10 meters of water pressure. Some European-made watches use the term "bar" instead.

  • Automatic

An automatic watch does not need hand-wound; the motion of the wearer's arm moves anoscillating weight which keeps the mainspring wound up.
