  • Electroplating

The process of applying a decorative finish to the base material.  Electroplating can be used for gold plating, rhodium plating or palladium plating.  The process involves suspending the watch in a solution of the chosen metal which then has an electric current passed through it.  Electrolysis occurs, causing the metal from the salts in the solution to stick to the watch, forming a complete new layer.  The amount of metal deposited is referred to as number of microns of plating.

  • Elapsed time rotating bezel

A rotating bezel used to monitor elapsed time.  The bezel can be turned so the wearer can align the zero on the bezel with the watch's seconds or minutes hand.  After a period of time passes, you can read the elapsed time off the bezel.  This sves you having to perform the subtraction that would be necessary if you used the watch's regular dial.

  • Ellipse

A closed, symmetric curve shaped like an oval, which can be formed by intersecting a cone with a plane that is not parallel or perpendicular to the cone's base.  The sum of the distances of any point on ellipse from two fixed points (called the foci) remains constant, no matter where the point is on the curve.

  • Emerald

Emerald is a mineral, coloured green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium.  It is highly prized as a gemstone and by weight is the most valuable gemstone in the world. Emeralds come in many shades of green and bluish green. There is a wide spectrum of clarity, dependent on the inclusions and fractures in the crystal. Clear stones with dark yet vibrant color command the highest prices.  The value of an emerald depends on cut, color, clarity, and carat.  Emerald is regarded as the traditional birthstone for May, as well as the traditional gemstone for the astrological signs of Taurus and Cancer.

  • Escapement

Device in a mechanical movement that controls the rotation of the wheels and thus the motion of the hands. Set of parts (escape wheel, lever, roller) which converts the rotary motion of the train into to-and-fro motion (the balance).
